Jean-Claude Ionita

From September 2003 to April 2014, Jean-Claude Ionita worked as an Assistant Professor in the Surgery Department of the Large Animal Hospital of the College of Veterinary Medicine at University of Leipzig, Germany, where he was in charge of the large animal anesthesia service. His activities focused on clinical anesthesia in large animal species and intensive care in the equine and education of students and interns in veterinary anesthesiology through class-room, laboratory, and clinical teaching. In addition, Jean-Claude has been active in research performing studies on equine regenerative medicine and equine autologous blood products, the results of which he is currently summarizing in an habilitation (equivalent to a Ph.D.) thesis to be soon submitted.

After receiving his DVM degree from the College of Veterinary Medicine at University of Berne in Switzerland in December 2000, Jean-Claude enrolled into an internship program at the Department of Veterinary Anesthesiology of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Berne. During this period he completed a 2-year doctorate program with Prof. Yves Moens and received his Dr. med. vet. degree from the University of Berne in November 2002. His doctorate studies focused on the validation of a new spirometry sensor for monitoring respiratory mechanics of horses under anesthesia. From January to June 2003 he was a research scientist at the Swiss National Stud in Avenches and collaborated on different projects involving equine behavioral testing and equine housing quality in Switzerland.

Jean-Claude holds two veterinary specialist certificates from the German Veterinary Medical Association in the State of Saxony that he received in 2010: one awarding him the specialist title in Veterinary Anesthesiology (Fachtierarzt für Anästhesiologie) and the other the title of Equine Practioner (Fachtierarzt für Pferde). Moreover, he holds the FELASA B certificate and worked as veterinary consultant for both the Translational Center for Regenerative Medicine (TRM) and the Biotechnological Biomedical Center (BBZ) of the College of Medicine at Leipzig University offering assistance in conducting life animal experiments. Jean-Claude’s research activities in the field of anesthesiology over the past 12 years have focused on intraoperative spirometry monitoring in horses, determination and quantification of xylazine-induced pulmonary effects in sheep using quantitative CT analysis, and evaluation of cardiorespiratory and sedative effects of romifidine and butorphanol in dromedaries. He has published numerous scientific articles, reviews, book chapters, abstracts, and proceedings in the fields of veterinary anesthesiology and equine regenerative medicine, and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences and seminars. In addition, he has frequently been invited as an anesthesia expert to consult with private and academic veterinary hospitals throughout Europe and the Middle East. He is a member of the International Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Society and the German Equine Veterinary Association (GEVA) and served in a number of committees of these societies.

Jean-Claude is married to an equine veterinarian and lives in Bonn, Germany.
