Course description

In the past decades, much advancement has been achieved in the science and art of anesthesia, perioperative analgesia, and critical patient care. In parallel, expectations and demand for improved anesthesia and the veterinary community and the general public. Therefore, advanced education of veterinary technicians in all aspects of veterinary anesthesia and analgesia is necessary to satisfy the growing expectations of both the veterinary community and animal owners and to optimize small animal health care in the future. The course program is directed towards credentialed veterinary technicians with a focused interest in small animal anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative care and who potentially pursue a career as a veterinary technician specialist (VTS) in Anesthesia & Analgesia or as a research anesthetist. The 4-module course combines traditional methods of lecturing and laboratory/workshop teaching with the new technology of on-demand e-learning. To facilitate translation of learnt information into clinical practice we include case studies, simulations, and footage of clinical case management into the training program. Furthermore, the program includes comprehensive education and simulator workshop training in basic and advanced techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation offering participants the opportunity to obtain certification as a RECOVER Certified Rescuer in Basic and Advanced Life Support. The Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Anesthesia & Analgesia (AVTAA) accepts successful completion of this program as having fulfilled all CE requirements necessary for submission of credentials to the AVTAA. The ALAVTN designates for the Research Anesthetist category a total of 90 continuing education (CE) credits upon successful completion of this program. For the Research Surgeon, the ALAVTN will accept 30% of the CE units toward the continuing education requirements for that subspecialty.
