Course description

In the past decades much advancement has been achieved in the science and art of anesthesia, perioperative pain management and critical patient care. In parallel expectations and demand for improved anesthesia and analgesia practices in animals has increased within the general public. Therefore, advanced education of veterinary technicians in all aspects of veterinary anesthesia and analgesia is necessary to satisfy the growing expectations of both the veterinary community and animal owners and to optimize health care of our animals in the future. The course program is directed towards credentialed veterinary technicians with a focused interest in small animal anesthesia, analgesia, and perioperative care and who potentially pursue a career as veterinary technician specialist (VTS) in anesthesia & analgesia or as a research anesthetist. The 4-module course combines traditional methods of lecturing and laboratory/workshop teaching with the new technology of on-demand e-learning. Furthermore, it offers the opportunity to obtain certification in basic and advanced techniques of cardiopulmonary resuscitation from the ACVECC. The AVTAA will designate a total of 90 continuing education (CE) credits upon successful completion of the program, as well as the ALAVTN for the Research Anesthetist category. For the Research Surgeon, the ALAVTN will accept 30% of the CE units towards the continuing education requirements for that subspecialty.
